The Skald Who Carried Memory

Before the sagas were written they were carried — by skalds, in metre, in the mouth. A skald was paid in silver and remembered in verse, and the weight of a people's memory sat on one person's shoulders. We named our densest braid after them because a chain is also a way of holding something together link by link, with nothing but tension and repetition.
